P2 Week Three

In “In Praise of Human Scum” by Michelle Goldberg, she questions the intentions of Republican supporters and encourages conservatives to end their loyalty to Trump. Goldberg conveys her message through a somewhat condescending tone. She backhandedly shows her hatred of Trump and disappointment in republicans through comments such as, “I’ve struggled to understand how people who’ve spent a lifetime chest-beating about patriotism can be so willing to burn liberal democracy to the ground to protect a man they wouldn’t trust to sell them a used car.” In this sentence, Goldberg exaggerates the ideas of Republicans and undermines President Trump. Goldberg’s use of a sarcastic anecdote provides an intriguing format for her audience to follow. Throughout her anecdote, Goldberg makes many allusions to former and current authors and politicians without explaining who they are. This shows that her audience is well experienced in or reads a lot about politics. After following a line of Goldberg’s reasoning, she finally introduces the topic of the article, Senator Mitt Romney of Utah, and his detachment from Trump. He was shamed and mocked by many for a Twitter account he created named “Pierre Delecto,” where he liked anti-Trump tweets. Republicans were ashamed to support him, and Democrats were unimpressed by his lack of calling for Trump’s impeachment. However, Goldberg actually supports Mitt Romney by stating, People like Romney shouldn’t be jeered for their inner Pierre Delectos. They should be urged to set them free.” Goldberg persuades the left-wing to be more supportive of Republicans that may have different beliefs but a common hatred for Trump.

    Comment for the author: The tone in which you write the piece, a burning hatred for Trump, discredits your ability to make a valid argument. Your evidence is intertwined with sarcastic jabs at Trump and his supporters. This creates a smaller audience with the same political beliefs.

Recently, the US Representative for California’s 25th Congressional District, Katie Hill, resigned from her position due to the release of nude photographs of herself published on blogs without her consent. This shows Morrison’s exigence for her interview with Jacobs since a similar event happened to her in 2011.
